Remember the previous, happy picture of these two? Well, this one is here to ruin it.
It all started while I was thinking: "Since Toriel was the brains behind the crown to Asgore, does that mean that Chara would be the same thing to Asriel when he became king?"
Before I could even begin thinking of the possibilities, the annoying, 'smart' part of my brain said: "But Chara wouldn't be able to survive long enough to see that happening."
The sad thing there? It's true. Chara wouldn't be able to live long in the Underground, what with the lack of sunlight and proper food. Her family would try to use magic to keep her HP stable, but I imagine it could only do that much.
If Chara and Asriel somehow didn't come up with their plan to cross through the barrier and gather six Souls, Chara would die anyway, many years later, because of serious health problems. She wouldn't get Asriel to absorb her Soul and cross the barrier, either, because they'd both be much older and realize the dangers the plan had.
All those thoughts led to this picture. Chara's Soul remains with the Dreemurrs, moving around and talking to monsters as if its owner was still there. It can even create an image of how Chara looked right before she died- very real-looking, but see-through and untouchable.
And so Chara stays with Asriel, watching him grow, while still keeping the role of the supportive sibling. As for Asriel, after accepting the fact that his friend is practically a ghost, he gradually becomes comfortable with the situation and often consults her when he needs help.
Now I'll have to admit that I really don't like this, haha. I think I hate it almost as much as the King Papyrus ending.
I mean, if Chara and Asriel never carry out their plan, none of the events of Undertale will happen.
But hey. It's a possibility, and it needed to be mentioned.
Please tell me someone else has already thought of this so I don't have to consider myself responsible. :'D

i think that Chara would have lived for a while has they not came up with the disastrous plan.
Therr is plenty of sunlight in the golden hall an throne room for Vit D production. As for food, it is implied that Chara lived with the Dreemurs for a while before getting sick, so I believe that monster food would suffice for a human.
The issue is much simpler than that. Humans only live for 80 years or so, simply put, they would outlive Chara. Not just by a little bit either.
My thought on this was simply that Chara loved to the end of their life and Azzy simply followed their wish and absorbed their soul so they could really be best friends forever.
